A spinal fusion is also known as a stabilizing back surgery. The name comes from the fact that the purpose of the surgery is to stabilize/stiffen the spine - either after a slipped joint between two vertebrae or due to changes in the lower back due to age or osteoarthritis, which can cause severe back and leg pain.
A common reason for undergoing spinal fusion surgery is spondylolisthesis, a condition in which one vertebra is displaced in relation to the adjacent vertebra. The condition, which in many cases requires spinal fusion surgery, occurs in approximately 8 percent of the population. The condition can be congenital, but it can also occur later in life due to age-related changes. In more rare cases, it occurs as a result of trauma.
The purpose of performing a stiffening, instrumented back surgery is to reduce your pain and improve your level of function.
Both slipped joints and osteoarthritis of the spine cause chronic pain in the lower back, and in some cases the pain radiates to the legs. This is because the nerves in the back don't have the space they would normally have.
Symptoms of a slipped joint or osteoarthritis between two vertebrae can include lower back pain, leg pain, heavy and tired legs when walking, reduced walking distance and relief when bending over or sitting down.
These conditions can only be diagnosed by a doctor who specializes in spine disorders. It is also the spine surgeon who decides whether a spinal fusion surgery is the best option to improve the patient's mobility and quality of life. At Capio, we have experienced and professional spine surgeons who are ready to guide you to the right treatment.
The surgery itself
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically lasts 1½-2 hours if a single joint is to be stiffened. In cases involving multiple joints, or if there has been previous surgery in the same area, the surgery time can be extended to 2½-3 hours, depending on the circumstances.
Lumbar fusion surgery can be performed in two different ways: We perform both lumbar fusion surgery with instrumentation (instrumented lumbar dese) and lumbar fusion surgery without the use of fixation (uninstrumented lumbar dese). The surgery is performed through the back, where an incision is made across the lower back. The muscles are loosened on both sides and an opening is made in the nerve canal to expose the nerves and remove the tissue that is pressing on the nerves. Part of the lumbar spine is stiffened using screws and rods made of titanium. To strengthen the vertebrae, a bone graft is added to create solid bone healing similar to the area stiffened in surgery.
The aftermath
Around 80% of patients who undergo spinal fusion surgery experience significant pain relief and an improved quality of life.
However, you should expect to be off work from 14 days to 3 months, depending on your occupation, with a rehabilitation period of up to six months. The post-surgery process is generally lengthy - your back will take 9-12 months to fully heal.
Cancellation of surgery
If the fasting rules are not followed, we will have to postpone the surgery. We also cannot perform the surgery if you have wounds, cuts, insect bites or similar in the surgical area, or if you have a cold, fever or are taking penicillin. Please contact the department where you are scheduled for surgery if you experience any of the above.
Back surgery at Capio
I had lower back surgery at Capio Hellerup over a year ago. I have been incredibly happy with the treatment I received during my hospitalization by both doctors and nurses and the follow-ups they gave me. Huge praise from here.
Hip replacement surgery
I had surgery on Wednesday, December 13th at Capio Aalborg and despite the circumstances, I had a good stay where I got answers to all my questions. I met a staff with great competence and empathy, so I can only give my best recommendations.
Thank you very much for everything.
